WORST FOODS TO REFRIGERATE

For those who don’t know me yet, I am a full vegan girl. As a vegan I get lots and lots of fruits and vegetables every week, but, even that I get them freshly every week I still want to make sure I keep them in the right storing places to keep their freshness longer and of course their flavors.

One day as I was looking for something on my fridge, I started to think about which ones were really supposed to be stored on the fridge and which ones were not. I grow up in a home where everything was on the fridge ("Love you mom and dad!") but with time I had learned that a lot of them were not supposed to stay in cold places and better yet having some fruits and vegetables stored outside my fridge is going to save some space for my prep foods for my week.

Bananas

Bananas may never be able to resume the ripening process even if returned to room temperature because storing bananas in the refrigerator disrupt the ripening process, the cold temperature within the fridge tends to slow down the ripening process.

Tomatoes

When you store tomatoes in the fridge the cold temperature mess with the texture and makes the tomato mushy and lose its flavor. I know, I know, I used to put these babies in the fridge too.

Potatoes

When potatoes get exposed to cold temperatures, the starches found in potatoes will turn to sugar, disrupting their flavor, their texture, and increasing their sugar content. Shocking right!

Onions

Again, when they get stored on cold they not only get soggy but they will make the entire fridge smell and taste like onions. Store them on a paper bag within a cool, dark cabinet to keep freshness longer.

Garlic

Garlic likes to go off pretty quick when stored in the fridge, it’ll grow mold and go rubbery-soft. The look on the outside does not change, so you’ll never be able to tell until you decide to use one.

Melon

There have been researches that show that keeping melon out at room temperature will actually help with keeping the antioxidant levels intact. Unless is already cut open do not store it on the fridge and make sure you use it quickly after you store it on the fridge. I always thought that this one was definitely a fridge fruit but again, I was wrong.

Fresh Herbs

I was shocked with this one, I always see them on the cold side of the supermarket but they should not be stored in the fridge. Truth is that unless you wrap them up tightly or put them in an air-tight container, you shouldn’t refrigerate your herbs. Fresh herbs are like coffee (another one you should not store on the fridge), they love to absorb smells around them, making them impossible to return to their original flavor. They also like to lose flavor and go dry in the fridge quickly.
